DRUG DETOX
The primary aim of drug detox (or detoxification) is to eliminate drug toxins that have accumulated in the human body.
One of the first steps in most detox programs is to take the patient off the drug. Cocaine, alcohol, heroin – you name it. If you have been using it, you must stop. This means complete withdrawal from the addictive drug. Of course, there will be consequences and tolls taken on your body. Once you deprive your body of the drug, you may need special medical and psychological assistance in order to preserve your resolve to quit for good. Look for a detox program that offers personal counselors to help you stay committed to quitting your drug use.
However, there are exceptions to the total withdrawal philosophy. For example, if a detox patient has been drinking heavily for several years, immediate and total withdrawal might not be the best detox option. Why not? Because some detox drug patients suffer so badly from immediate and complete withdrawal that they may even die from the trauma. In any event, most detox programs have qualified medical professionals who can quickly evaluate your drug use and medical history in order to determine what kind of detox plan is best for you.
The whole reason detox programs exist is to help drug users stop their drug addictions cold without relapsing due to the severity of withdrawal. Another important reason for detox is that many drug users mix different harmful drugs rather than stick to just one drug. This can make the volatile cocktail of blood toxins more difficult to treat, so there are drug detoxification centers that help such people quit all their harmful drugs.
